INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
It's here in all the pieces of my shame
That now I find myself again.
I yearn to belong to something, to be contained
In an all-embracing mind that sees me...
-Rainer Maria Rilke
We all want to feel more fully alive, connected and whole. People may seek individual therapy when the pain of feeling disconnected from the source of their wellbeing is too great to bear, or when feelings of depression, anxiety, anger or shame lower the ceiling on what it means to be human. Though perhaps unwanted, these feelings can also signal an opportunity for growth and sweep us back into a vibrant encounter with our self.

Individual therapy can provide that containing and embracing mind about which Rilke wrote, first in the person of the therapist, but then, more enduringly, as the therapy progresses, in the person of the client. As clients come to engage the experiences of their past and present more fully, feeling a greater range (and play) of thoughts, feelings and sensations, the shadow of the past can recede in its own time and manner. A greater capacity to feel joy and freedom can then emerge.

Though I work with a range of issues in my practice, I strive to help clients attune to the subtleties of experiences and emotions that lend life its flavor, meanings and depth. I also pay close attention to how the therapy relationship unfolds between the two of us, for that relationship can itself become the locus of the work – and of one’s healing. To that end, therapist, no less than client, must marshal the courage to be transparent and honest.
